The greening of Fordham University Lincoln Center
transformed a barren paved wasteland into a green oasis. This parkland setting
gave the University a much-needed campus.
The firm of MPF&P was commissioned by Fordham University to eliminate the problems of water leakage and under-utilization on the existing campus located over the University Library. As part of that commission a master plan was created for the Lincoln Center Campus which identified important components of the existing and future infrastructure of the site, including pedestrian and handicapped access, axis location, future building sites, etc. The master plan set the stage for the reconstruction of the campus from a barren rooftop to a hospitable, green environment, which serves as the center of campus life. Facilities, which contribute, to the design include; congregating areas for student activities, passive gardens, athletic facilities, including tennis courts, basketball, and a jogging track. A major entrance treatment was also created at the main public entrance of the campus, which provides access to the upper campus and the main building. The site includes areas for dining, and other impromptu activities such as grass mounds for sunning, or studying, benches for sitting or playing chess and an area programmed for the introduction of permanent and temporary sculptures.
