Issues: This full city block was formerly an uninviting stretch of outmoded, underutilized buildings with no organization or sense of place.
Solution: The urban design plan included three tree types of space: a tree-canopied dining terrace, an atrium plaza, and an outdoor garden courtyard. Activities planned for the spaces include: passive seating, dining, performances, exhibits and displays. The design responded to the existing urban fabric by relating the newly created spaces to the adjacent government buildings. Tree canopied courtyards, landscaped terraces, and an interior atrium are intentionally orchestrated to dispel the banality usually associated with such government office. Sculptors Jackie Ferrara and Walter Dusenbery collaborated with M. Paul Friedberg to explore a unique approach to integrating art and landscape architecture expanding the visual richness of the spaces.
