We were prime consultants for the urban design plan for a 23 block pedestrian mall in downtown Madison, one of the most successful urban rehabilitation projects in the country. The project site included the open space surrounding the State Capitol, and State Street, the traditional shopping street of Madison and the link to the University of Wisconsin remains a vital economic and social center. The work included the master planning of the total project area plus the schematic design of the first improvement project site: two blocks near the university. An interesting aspect of this project was the community participation program in the decision-making process and their commitment to the consensus planning objectives.
